WORKSHOP AT THE LITERARY ART SCHOOL OF VANTAA, FINLAND

3rd to 31st of May 2024

The research group transitory writing in no one’s land gave a workshop about collective writing as an observational tool and an aesthetic practice on Fridays in May 2024 at the Literary Art School of Vantaa. The school is situated by the Tikkuraitti and Tikkurilantori pedestrian area giving the possibility to practice explorative writing in public space and to focus on shared spaces and reciprocated texts. The participants at the Literary Art School of Vantaa have a long term experience in writing – up to 20 years! – rendering lively conversations and minute writerly observations. The workshop was concluded by audio recordings with the guidance of sound designer Pelle Venetjoki. These recordings have been edited to an audio installation exhibited within the exhibition Good, Better Vantaa at the Vantaa City Museum 30.8.2024-9.3.2025.

The sessions consisted of score-based writing and as in Granada we began with a walking score. This score can be seen as an attunement practice of walking together in silence from the school to the place of writing; in Tikkurila happening in commercial urban space with many passers-by. The first set of writing scores depended on the writing of lists in three versions; notate/copy text on display in public space, make a list about what is moving and what is still, and write a list about what catches your eye. The intention with this form of writing (to list) is to introduce observational writing independent of narration. It is also intended as a beginning to bring in the senses to the act of writing. The second session began with a reading prompt starting from reading silently and then moving towards a multitude of simultaneous, and occasionally loud, voices. The writing on that Friday evening was introduced by the notion of the acousmatic, and the score was an invitation to describe what one was hearing, to name it and then to mimic the sound by text/writing. The third session consisted of writing and a mapping practice that included the estimation of distances. The concluding session of writing began by a walking practice employing the map for a walk following the previous routes of writing. The walking was followed by writing score titled What do people pay attention to? This score was related to the reading of Ecologies of Attention by Yves Citton and collective writing on the 18th of May 2024 by the full research group in different locations.
