WORKSHOP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE AMERICAS PUEBLA, MEXICO

transitory writing in no one’s land is an artistic research project with iterations structured as workshops interweaving situated, performative and embodied writing. The enquiry is practice-led with a method of collaborative writing/reading in public space; a use of scores for writing, bringning forth relational aspect of writing together and translinguality. The project facilitated a workshop 4-15.11 2024 at the Universidad de las Americas Puebla with writing taking place at San Pedro Cholula and a talk was given at the university in Puebla. Over 4 days we worked together to develop and evolve the ongoing enquiry of the artistic research project transitory writing in no one’s land. The sessions followed the sense of the arc of our current enquiry: beginning by grounding in an awareness of the sensorial body and situated embodiment/positionality; before opening towards an exploration of self/other awareness; joint attention; sensitization to one’s cultural disposition by attending to the ‘between’ as well as commonalities/differences of perspectives and language. The hope was to open towards the potential of an emergent “we”, towards the collective – through shared acts of intimacy within writing in public; through various scores involving translation and translinguality.
On the first day, with a focus on the sensorial body/attention, we started with an attunement score and continued with a writing score titled as far as the eye can see with the following instruction; “arrive in space: at an edge of the space, find a sense of ease/comfort as a ground. Each choose a spot, writing from a still position. Allow the angle of the head to change, looking up and down and how this effects how far the eye can see. Attending to close up and distance. Allow the body to rotate. After 10 mins reassemble at the arrival point.” On the second day the focus shifted to embodied situatedness, transitions and spatial orientations. Writing attended to the range of near and far – observing the furthest distance and closest proximity (even inside one’s own body/thoughts). On the third day we focussed on joint attention, on an awareness of cultural dispositions, commonalities and differences. The concluding day of writing continued to explore themes around self/other awareness and moved towards the collective as an emergent “we”. A new feature given an abbreviated name TRA emerged bringing attentio to translations, translinguality, transmutation, and crossings/hybridisations/between language. The workshop was concluded with audio recordings of transcribed texts. These recordings are currently being processed and edited into an audio work.
